I'm on my way to Manitoba with my mom tomorrow, to visit my Granny, aunts, cousins, and wee little second cousins. We'll be staying at the cottage on Lake Winnipeg. I'm excited to see everyone, and I'm excited to escape the humidity of Ontario, which feels all the more oppressive after my brief hiatus from this dense, liquid atmosphere. With the awesome but overwhelming resurgence of people and happenings in my life, I hope this trip will offer some time and space to think. There's the return to London to think about, and all I've left behind.
It will be tortuous forgoing Granny's pierogies, with their butter-fried onions and sour cream toppings. Morning milkshakes, gumdrop cookies, butter tarts with carefully counted raisins, homemade buns, and meatballs sauced in gravy - the flavours of Granny-visits that will be dearly missed. But Dan and I hunted down some gluten-free goodies today, a tricky quest in London, and my luggage includes GF oats and ginger snaps, chickpea flour, vegan margarine, and tahini,. I also found some exciting vegan, gluten-free shampoo and conditioner - it might be overkill on the allergy front, but it's made from 100% organic and Canadian ingredients!
On another note, I'd like to congratulate Melon, my dear friend and hero, for making news in the London Free Press when she's living in faraway India. In all her magnificence, she's won a grueling competition of Hole-in-the-Wall, inspiring me - and the world - once again!
